My journey to Karelia
Bear Tracks, Forest Songs, Löyly and Midnight Sun

In June I was out and about in the forests of North Karelia, very close to the Russian border. One week was spiritual: a shamanic pilgrimage around the mystical Lake Pielinen with the wonderful guides Anna-Kathariina Hollmerus and Helena Karhu. Karhu means "bear", by the way. Those days were shaped by closeness to nature and silence, and by learning about local traditions. The people of Karelia are still deeply connected to the land they live on. You can feel their great love for nature and all the beings who live there, and how they themselves are simply a part of it. For example, we learned songs that are sung to ask a forest whether you may enter it, and to recognize its answer in simple signs. There are bear songs, water songs, fire songs… You might smile at all this – but rituals like these inevitably make you more attentive and more mindful of yourself and your surroundings. It can also be done entirely in silence. And that does you real good, even if you're not on a spiritual path.

We went to the sauna, which plays a central role in Finnish life. In some places, children are still born there and the dead are bid farewell. Either way, no matter how or where you live, it's a fixed part of everyday life. Often the sauna is also the bathroom. I learned that you can perfectly well wash your hair with bowls of water, and that it's lovely when the women help each other with it. The steam you get when you pour water on the hot stones is called löyly. It means something like "the hot breath of life", and it has its own character in every sauna. If you pay attention, you really do notice it. Sometimes it is gentle, sometimes wild… You greet the sauna, and at the end you thank it. If you'd like to learn more about this special way of taking a sauna, I recommend the film "Smoke Sauna Sisterhood". It's set in Estonia, but comes very close to my experience.
Spontan nackt in einen einsamen See springen.
Kiitos, Finland!

I could talk about my experiences for hours. The wildness of Finnish nature completely overwhelmed me. Ferns so tall you feel tiny. The midnight sun makes you want to sink into it. The silence. Spontaneously jumping naked into a lonely, freezing lake. The thrill of being surprised by a bear track on the trail. Going out at night to look for moose. Colorful wooden houses and enchanted flower meadows.
Luckily, we had another week, just the two of us, in a remote forest house with a lake and, of course, a sauna, to let it all fade out gently.
Kiitos, Finland! In the gallery, you’re welcome to dive a little deeper into my memories:
